Belkyra

Health Canada approved Belkyra is also known as Kybella in the United States. Deoxycholic acid, the main ingredient in Belkyra is a clear, synthetic liquid created to replicate the naturally occurring molecule found in our body. Belkyra is indicated for the improvement in the “appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat (double chin) in adults.” (Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, 2018, p.3) Belkyra is a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction.

A series of 2 to 6 treatments, administered four weeks apart, is typically required to reach optimal results.  Immediately after the treatment, a slight burning sensation can last for a few minutes followed by numbing of the area.  Most side effects will improve after several days. Mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and numbness, can last up to several weeks.

It is not suggested to have Belkyra if you have; an infection in the area, problems swallowing, bleeding abnormalities, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additional contraindications and precautions can be found in the product monograph here.

Upon arrival

Each Belkyra treatment can take up to 30 minutes to complete. During this time a thorough medical history consult will be completed. Full consent forms are signed while confidential medical photos are taken.

Treatment

The skin should be cleared of all make-up and cream before each appointment. Pre-cleansing of any make-up or oils will take place followed by the application of topical numbing cream, ice and a mild vibration to help with any discomfort from the injections. A temporary grid is applied to the skin which acts as a guide for each injection placement.  Approximately 15-30 small injections are performed under the chin, targeting the fat pocket. The grid is then removed while the acid “physically disrupts the cell membrane.” (Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, 2018, p.12) These fat cells are metabolized by the body over the following weeks.

Post Care

Mild discomfort, burning or tenderness can be expected for a few days after the anesthetic wears off from the treatment. Swelling and redness will increase for the first 1‐2 days and will subside over the next two weeks.  Mild bruising, itching or warmth can be present at the injection site.  Numbness or firmness in the areas injected may be present and take up to 30 days to completely resolve.
